There's no getting around it, every job interview needs preparation!

What shall I wear? Do I research the company? Is a SWOT analysis required? Is there a website? What questions do I ask? What are they looking for?

Let's face it; these are all questions we ask ourselves before attending an interview.

At DISCOVER RETAIL we offer clear advice on how to act in an interview situation, it is our job to know what your interviewer is looking for! Once we have talked through the job opportunity we will guide you through the interview, however the key to success is your preparation!

Follow the useful hints and tips below; this should assist you in making the interview a success.

  • Always leave enough time to prepare for an interview. Never wait until the night before.
  • Never make excuses to your interviewer for your lack of preparation. Prepare well!
  • Use the web, industry magazines, contacts, current employees and our experience to build up your knowledge.
  • Know your market and industry.
  • Always ask prior to the interview whether a SWOT analysis is required (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) this will always assist you in conducting an interesting and informative interview.
  • You will be judged partially on how you dress and present yourself, there is no getting away from it! Your dress varies depending on your industry and the job you are being interviewed for. Always research the dress code; it is not always a suit!
  • Always be passionate about the new opportunity, take time to learn the company's culture and build up your knowledge of what key skills and attitudes they are looking for.
  • Always take pre-prepared questions to ask at the end of the interview, at least five incase any questions are covered during the interview!
  • Loose those floppy hand shakes!
  • Never be negative towards your current or previous employers.
  • Smile and use positive body language.
  • Always thank your interviewer for taking the time to meet with you.
  • Finally only if you feel comfortable ask your interviewer what they thought of you and do they think you will be suited to the role.
